Tricks and Tips for Good Product Photography

Many of us who are selling their art and crafts online may have to settle with doing our own product photography. You can also ask your photographer buddy to do a product shoot for you if you’re lucky. But for the rest of us, this means making do with what we have. You don’t need expensive equipment or the latest Mamiya, because all it takes is a little resourcefulness and creativity. After all, your product photos are the first things your potential consumers will see before they decide on buying anything.

Lighting is everything, and it dictates the mood and the feel of your product. You can make your dining area or if you have a veranda your make shift studio. If you’re indoors, you can choose an area where natural light can flood in. Mid morning or afternoon is the ideal time to take some photos. Don’t have an apple box? You can make one using crates or cardboard boxes and cover them with white paper. Elevate your products being photographed so that you can adjust well when taking a photo. This may seem like a no brainer but putting thought into simple product photography makes all the difference. Don’t think of taking photos as a chore, you can experiment with many other elements of your products. Photography is a relaxing hobby and fun, but it can be pretty exhausting. Finally, when you’re done taking photos of your products, always Photoshop them. Why? You can make the lighting more uniform for all photos—brighten them or balance the midtones and sharpness so that all the details will be visible. Crop the photos when necessary. Investing in a good macro lens is also advisable.
